Damage under civil law is a monetary compensation claimed by a plaintiff or awarded by a court of law in a civil action to a person who has suffered a loss because of the wrongful act of the defendant. The purpose of damage is to restore an injured party to a position he was in before being harmed or to calculate the future loss to claim damages in different forms like loss of property, loss of reputation, loss of life or disability, etc. It is a sort of remedial rather than preventive. Civil damage can be general, punitive or special, or a combination of any of these. General damages include payment for non-quantitative damages such as pain and suffering. Punitive damages include payment for damages caused by the gross negligence of a defendant. Special damages include compensation for expenses such as medical bills, legal costs, loss of income, and costs associated with repairing or replacing damaged property.
